Benchmarks: Week Twenty-Seven

Aaron 3Welcome to Phuket Fit’s weight loss and fitness blog. I’m your host, Aaron Rowland. I’m a 27-year-old writer from Los Angeles, California. At my heaviest weight twenty-months ago, I weighed in at 160 KGs.  I’m here at Phuket Fit to lose weight, improve my fitness and have the adventure of a lifetime. I’ve been here fourteen months so far and I’m staying indefinitely. My favorite exercises are the bicycle crunch and the medicine ball slam. Barbell thrusters, suicide planks and burpees give me nightmares.

Fueling Your Body

It’s important to remember that the food you consume is the fuel your body uses for energy. If you’re eating things that lack nutritional value, your body won’t have the basic nutrients it needs to function. Ideally, you shouldn’t even need to take vitamins or supplements. Ideally, you should be getting all the goodness your body needs from the healthy foods you eat. Fresh vegetables, lean meats and selected fruits give your body what it needs and will give you the energy to succeed on your weight loss mission. For me, I’ve been eating a very strict diet the last two weeks on my mission to hit 99 KGs by Christmas. It hasn’t been easy. Even in Thailand temptation is everywhere, but two weeks into it… I feel great. You wouldn’t believe the extra energy and vigor you can receive in life by eating the proper things.

Aaron 2Building Your Body

Over the last two weeks I’ve been very focused on my workout routine as well. Every day, I wake up and attend Phuket Fit’s Body Fit class. It’s a high intensity cardio-burn that also implements some strength and conditioning elements. After that I either attend our afternoon Cross Training class or spent some time lifting weights in the gym. In Thailand, even the evenings are a perfect time to workout. It’s cooler and the street isn’t as bustling. Finishing off the day with a night jog or walk is a great way to burn some extra calories and helps you fall asleep more easily.

The End Of Week Twenty-Seven

I step on the scale to discover that I weight 226.0 LBS, for a weight loss of five pounds this week, for a total of 11.6 LBS lost in the last two weeks. I’m not only eight pounds away from my goal of hitting 218 LBS (99 KGS). It hasn’t been easy the last couple weeks, but the effort has clearly been worth it. If you’re willing to eat incredibly clean and also exercise your butt off, I promise you that you will get results. Just look at the Victories we’ve posted on this blog. People come to Phuket Fit to lose weight and they succeed.

Aaron 1What’s Up Next?

Just three weeks left to hit my 99 KG goal by Christmas, and I’m feeling confident. It will take a lot more work, but I know that it’s possible! If I can keep up this pace, then I’ll get there a week early!

Have a great week of weight loss! If you set your mind on it, I know you can do it!

Victories: Ash J Gibson Triumphing After Tragedy

Ash Transition

A thirty-two-year-old café and customer service worker from New Zealand, Ash J Gibson has dealt with more than her share of tragedy. Losing both her parents unexpectedly only seven week apart, she found herself severely depressed and overwhelmed by grief. Stopping work, she was forced to deal with the sale of her family home and other legal issues regarding her parents’ estate. Deciding she needed both a break and a fresh start, she ventured out to Phuket Fit and in the process has discovered the warrior inside that she never knew she possessed. Having faced adversity at every turn, she has battled through it all, going from a top weight of 130 KGs down to her current weight of 80 KGs. She arrived at camp lost in life, overweight and unhealthy. When she finishes her training in a few months, she’ll return home the embodiment of Phuket Fit strength and spirit. She even plans on working toward her PT and Group Fitness certifications. This is her story…

When you were first looking at traveling, what made you choose Phuket Fit?

I just woke up one day and decided I needed to come to Thailand. I can’t explain it; I’d never really planned on traveling to Thailand before. I looked into the different options… going to a monastery, doing a yoga retreat, everything. Finally I found Phuket Fit online and it seemed to be the best fit for me. It offered more activities and things to do around than the other places I was exploring. I exchanged some e-mails with their staff and found it was easy to get information and reassurance that it was the right place for me.

When you arrived at Phuket Fit did you set any goals for yourself?

I first arrived at Phuket Fit about a year ago and trained for a few months. Then I returned home for a bit, and spent some time traveling in Australia, Ko Samui, and South America. When I returned to Thailand after that, I spent a few months at a different gym, but it wasn’t quite the same. I came to visit Phuket Fit and participate in their 12 Hour Cross Training Challenge for charity and decided to come back.

Ash 2

It made me realize that Phuket Fit’s body fit and cross training are way more advanced and strenuous then the ones I attended at the other gym. Phuket Fit is a real community. Here people will cheer you on, pushing you to finish your workout, even if they’ve already finished theirs. It can be a competition, but in a fun and supportive environment.

Since I started back at Phuket Fit in the last month and a half, I’ve lost more weight in that time then I lost the full four months at the other gym.

When you returned to Thailand did you set new goals for yourself?

I was at 103 KGs and my goal was to get down to 75 KGs. Right now I’m at exactly 79.5 KGs. I’ve got a couple months left here at Phuket Fit, so I know I can achieve my ultimate goal.

Have you faced many challenges along the way?

A lot. Now and then the emotional stuff still comes up and affects the way I’m training. Loneliness can be a problem; being here so long and missing home. I also used to have really bad cravings, but I’ve found that now they don’t happen as often. You just have to power through.

Can you think of anything fun or memorable that you’ve been through here at Phuket Fit?

The Halloween BBQ Beat Down last year. I missed this year’s one, but I had an incredible time last year. It was so much fun dressing up as a zombie and cheering on the fighters. I also enjoyed learning how to drive a scooter for the first time, snorkeling for the first time and even driving a jet ski! Ive been able to do lots of little island trips, which have been great.

Ash 3

What are your favorite and least favorite exercises you’ve encountered at Phuket Fit?

I hate doing any kind of squat. I have weak knees, so I have to be careful when doing them. I really love medicine ball slams, but I think my favorite exercise is when we drag tires with barbell weights on top of them. Dragging all that extra weight I used to carry on my body helps me realize how far I’ve come in my own journey.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about coming to Phuket Fit?

I have a lot of friends and strangers messaging me asking me about how I’ve gotten my results and I’ve been sending them all to Phuket Fit. It’s got the best range of choices and the best community feeling. Just look at my photos and my progress. If you’re willing to put in the work at Phuket Fit, you will succeed.

When you finish your weight loss journey in February, do you think you’ll ever return to Phuket Fit?

Once I leave, I have to start getting settled at home, so it might be a year or two before I return. I will definitely be coming back, though. I feel like I’ve almost achieved my goals here, but I would love to bring a group of people to Phuket Fit who are dealing with loss, or even a group of fellow LGBT Kiwis, to work with them and train. It would be nice to give back and help other people on their journeys. It would also be a great way for me to keep fit.

I have never really been into sports in my life. My parents tried putting me in Kung Fu and gymnastics, but it never really worked out. I used to be bullied throughout school and never really felt supported by most my extended family because of some recent misunderstandings.

I love my family, though, and all the incredible friends Ive made on my journey. My parents were incredibly health conscious and always wanted me to lose weight. I know they would be proud of me.

Thailand is an incredibly spiritual place. Its beaches and sunsets brought me back. It feels like home.

Benchmarks: Week Twenty-Five

Aaron 4Welcome to Phuket Fit’s weight loss and fitness blog. I’ve been here thirteen months so far and I’m staying indefinitely. My favorite exercises are the bicycle crunch and the medicine ball slam. Barbell thrusters, suicide planks and burpees give me nightmares.

A Long Burn Workout

Sometimes it can be great to get a quick intense workout in; twenty to thirty minutes of non-stop pulse pounding sweatiness. If you’re looking for a bit of a slower burn, a long walk can also be a great workout. I know what you’re thinking. A walk? Does that really count as a workout? Absolutely! Back when I was at my heaviest, walking was my primary source of exercise and now that I’ve lost some weight I still love to take long walks. From Phuket Fit to the top of Big Buddha is a little under 10KM, which makes it 20KM round trip. Walking at a steady pace the entire way takes about four hours, and trust me, you’ll feel the burn when you’re finished. A 20 KM Buddha walk can be an excellent way to relax and distress during an intense week of fitness, while getting a great workout at the same time!

Aaron 3Setting Goals

In weight loss, it can be hard to look at the bigger picture and not be overwhelmed. You might have 10 LBS, 30 LBS, 50 LBS, 100 LBS or even more weight to lose, and you know it’s going to be a slow process. Sometimes the best thing to do is set small goals for yourself to work towards. Don’t focus on the hundred pounds you need to lose, but instead on the fifteen or twenty you can lose this month. I’ve set a personal goal to reach 99 KGS (218.2 LBS) by Christmas morning. What better present could I give to myself than health and fitness? It won’t be easy, but I’m confident I can achieve it. By training at Phuket Fit, I know I’ve put myself in the perfect environment for success.

Aaron 2The End Of Week Twenty-Five

I step on the scale and see that I weigh 237.6 LBS. That means I have about nineteen pounds to lose over the next month to hit my goal. If I can lose a little over four pounds a week, then I will have succeeded. Just because your weight loss might have slowed or stalled, its always important to keep perspective and not lose hope. Just keep moving in the right direction and you’ll eventually achieve you goals. Don’t let someone else dictate your pace, lose weight the way that works fro you and your life.

What’s Up Next?

Aaron 1Now is the time to buckle down with my training and refocus my eating habits. To accomplish this, I’ve teamed up with a friend of mine also training at Phuket Fit and we’ve developed a buddy system to keep each other accountable. Training and eating with like-minded friends is a great way to help you achieve your goals.

Have a great week of weight loss! If you set your mind on it, I know you can do it!

Benchmarks: Week Twenty-Three

Aaron 1Welcome to Phuket Fit’s weight loss and fitness blog. I’m your host, Aaron Rowland. I’m a 27-year-old writer from Los Angeles, California. At my heaviest weight eighteen-months ago, I weighed in at 160 KGs.  I’m here at Phuket Fit to lose weight, improve my fitness and have the adventure of a lifetime. I’ve been here thirteen months so far and I’m staying indefinitely. My favorite exercises are the bicycle crunch and the medicine ball slam. Barbell thrusters, suicide planks and burpees give me nightmares.

Back In The Saddle

The week after a gain can be tough. While it motivates you to work harder and eat cleaner, it can also be discouraging and feel like you’re not making progress. When those feelings occur, it’s important to brush them aside and focus on the week ahead. You can’t take back the food you ate or the workouts you skipped in the previous week, but you can focus on doing better this week. Leave the past right where it belongs, in the past.

Aaron 3Working Hard or Hardly Working?

After having spent over a year at Phuket Fit, it can sometimes be easy to forget that I’m living in a tropical paradise. Instead of spending eight hours a day stuck in an office doing paperwork, I’m exercising outdoors surrounded by a supportive group of friend and trainers. If I want a break, I’m a mere ten minutes away from a relaxing few hours at the beach. Weight loss is tough, but it doesn’t have to be a chore. If you can find a fun and enjoyable way to lose weight, the odds of keeping it off are astronomically higher than if you’re miserable. That’s one of the things that make Phuket Fit work so well for weight loss. It’s genuinely a good time. It may be hard work, but it’s hard work in an magical place.

The End Of Week Twenty-Three

I knew I would lose weight this week. I’d done everything right. Eating very healthy and exercising like a beast. Even in my off times, I would fine cool fitness activities like badminton and Frisbee golf to fill up my schedule. I step on the scale, and see that I weigh 236.4 LBS. That’s down 7.8 LBS from my nightmare weigh-in last week and is another great step on my journey to fitness and health.

Aaron 4What’s Up Next?

This next week will be a tough one. I’ve made it my goal to walk from Phuket Fit to the Big Buddha and back. At almost 20KMs, it will take me 3-4 hours and features a steep incline as you approach the Buddha. It won’t be easy, but it wouldn’t be a challenge if it were. I’ll let you know next week how I fare.

Have a great week of weight loss! If you set your mind on it, I know you can do it!

Victories: Allen Paisansiri 5 Months & 30 KGS

Allen 1A twenty-two-year-old from San Fransisco, Allen Paisansiri is now even more energized and ready to power through life. Having taken a year off of college to grow and gain more experience, he decided Phuket Fit would be the perfect place to relax, explore and focus in on what he wants to do for the rest of his life. Now he’s a transformed man. In only five short months, Allen has dropped 30 KGS (66 LBs) and discovered a newfound confidence. His favorite exercise is the Turkish get-up and his least favorite exercises are burpees and squats. This is his story

How did you find out about Phuket Fit?

My family is Thai and they take yearly trips to Thailand, trips that I usually miss out on because of school or work. When the time came for me to take a break and explore, I automatically thought of Thailand because my younger brothers always came back with fun stories about their trip. My mom and dad are Muay Thai fanatics and often stream fights online. After learning about the sport and taking a look at the conditioning that was required for it, all it took was a quick Google search. Phuket Fit’s informative website made it my first choice.

What first made you want to come?

Initially I thought it was a break from school and work, but after awhile I realized it was because I wasn’t happy with the way my body looked. I desperately wanted to change. I remember telling one of my best friends that I wish I could just disappear for a bit and come back looking completely different. This was that chance.

How long were you at Phuket Fit?

A total of five months.

When you arrived here, did you set any goals for yourself?

Weight loss was my goal. I was looking to lose weight in order to look and feel better about myself. Losing weight meant a lot of things for me, but most importantly in my mind, I felt that losing weight would fix everything. I would be more confident in approaching people and making new friends.

Allen 2

How do you fare at meeting those goals?

I guess you could say it was a success. I can’t help but smile every time the topic of weight loss and my Thailand trip comes up. In the five months I spent at Phuket Fit, I lost a whopping 30 KGS (66 LBs). I never expected it to be that much, but I just kept losing weight. I remember other guests coming up to me and telling me that I was melting right before their eyes.

What accomplishments at Phuket Fit are you proud of?

Besides the changes in the body, I would say it’s the change in my mind that is my biggest accomplishment. It’s funny because you’d think at a fight/weight loss camp, there would be a lot of aggression and people would just stick to themselves to train. But we’re like a family here. Sure, there are one or two people that were aggressive, but for the most part I had such a mind cleansing experience. Phuket Fit really helped me clear my mind and open up my mind.

Did you face any setbacks or challenges along the way?

The number one challenge was definitely being alone. I had some days where I would lay in bed till eleven or midnight just thinking about what my friends and family were doing back home. It was my first time leaving the United States and alone, at that. It was with the help of other guests that allowed me to stay for so long. I’ve made friends at Phuket Fit who were also exploring and finding themselves and some days after training we would sit, have lunch and just talk. This always cheered me up and put a smile on my face.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about coming to Phuket Fit?

Don’t psych yourself out; just do it. Book your stay and stick to it. Yes, you will miss your friends and family. Yes, you can Skype them. I would have gotten nowhere if I let my mind do all the talking. I remember telling myself, “Don’t think. Just do.” Conquer Big Buddha. You will love it. My first time up Big Buddha, I took an hour and ten minutes. Before I left, my personal best was 33:46. It’s possible!

What surprised you the most about Phuket Fit?

The people that came to train. There were people from all over the world, all different sizes and ages. Even after leaving Phuket Fit I still keep in touch with these people. We’ve even planned a reunion together next year back at Phuket Fit!

Allen 3

Tell me about one fun memorable thing that happened to you during your time at Phuket Fit.

I won a BBQ Beatdown and it was pretty much the most terrifying thing of my life. But I had so much fun. My first BBQ Beatdown was a draw, and during the first 30 seconds of the first round of that fight I actually busted a vein in my eye and it swelled up and shut. Every time I tried to hit my opponent after that, I would always miss by a little bit because with one eye shut, everything was kind of shifted. It remained that way for maybe two to three weeks, but I still kept going to training everyday. I’ll never forget to block or dodge and weave now!

Have you learned anything that you’ll use back home?

I would say Phuket Fit was my catalyst. It started everything. I’m home now and still working out every single day. My friends definitely notice the change and I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve heard the words, “OMG you lost weight” or “you look so good.” Phuket Fit made things simple for me. You eat right, you work out, you meet your goal. Being in the United States makes it very challenging to achieve your goals. Everyone is trying to make a quick buck off miracle diets because there is such a large market for weight loss. They tell you that you can’t eat after this time, or carbs are bad for you, or if you buy this product you’ll lose weight, or some other lame thing like nutrient timing. After having spent five months at Phuket Fit, it is now so easy for me to determine what’s correct and what isn’t.

Phuket Fit helped me restore my confidence. It reminded me of what I had all along.

Benchmarks: Week Twenty-Two

Twenty-Two Weeks Down, A Lifetime To Go

Weight loss isn’t easy. If it was, everyone would do it. Instead we find ourselves with a worldwide obesity epidemic that only grows worse wand worse as the years go on. You will stumble on your journey and sometimes it can be easy to lose sight of your ultimate goals or the reasons for wanting to lose weight. The more you can do to remind yourself of that, the better. The last few weeks have been very difficult in my journey. It’s been tough to muster up the energy to work out or find the strength to resist the temptation to eat poorly. On any long weight-loss journey, you’ll find yourself eventually in the same place. Your weight will plateau or rise a bit and you’ll find that it’s tough to find the motivation to keep going. When this happens, it’s important to not lose sight of your accomplishments. Even if you have a few bad weeks, think about all the hard work you’ve put in and how successful you’ve already been. It’s not about never failing. It’s about picking yourself up after failure and continuing to move forward. Don’t worry about the one step back, focus on the two steps forward.

Aaron 3Creating An Environment For Success

One of the best ways to help keep yourself motivated is by surrounding yourself with success. That’s the best part about being at Phuket Fit; likeminded people who are supportive of your goals surround you. During any given class, you’ll hear words of encouragement from your fellow guests, pushing you to work harder than you thought was possible. If you can succeed in carving out your own group of friends at Phuket Fit, you’ll suddenly find yourself attending more classes than you thought you’d be able to and eating in a super healthy way. Journeys are easier when you can share the load. That’s the Phuket Fit way.

The End Of Week TwentyAaron

Stepping on the scale after a couple weeks, I know it isn’t going to be pretty. I’ve been attending all the right classes, but not eating the foods I need to. Mark it down as a short-term loss of self-control, suck it up, and step on the scale. I gained weight. Not surprising. No tears and no frown, though. I’m still all smiles. I’ve slipped up before and came back even stronger.  What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and I feel revved up to conquer the scale next week. Lose five pounds next week. That’s my goal and I feel great about meeting or surpassing it.

AaronfWhat’s Up Next?

Attend two classes a day, find other ways to stay active, and eat the foods that my body needs to function. It isn’t rocket science, but it’ll still take work. No skipping classes for a lie-in this week. It’s pure unadulterated focus. Don’t stand in my way, because it’s pedal to the metal toward me goal!

Have a great week of weight loss! If you set your mind on it, I know you can do it!

Checking In With Robin: Chapter One

Robin 1Robin has been at Phuket Fit for the last five years in a variety of capacities. Robin describes his job duties as “having a hand in pretty much everything at camp” and says that he is Will Elliot’s (Phuket Fit’s GM) right-hand man. Robin is currently embarking on his own weight loss journey over the next year and we are checking in with him regularly to see how his journey is progressing. He started at 140 KGs and his goal is to get down to 80KGs over the course of a year. He has started his program with a detox at Atmanjai Wellness Center to help boost his metabolism and give his body a much-needed tune-up.

What Is Atmanjai?

Robin 4Phuket Fit & MMA and Atmanjai Wellness Center are now working together to offer combined programs for those interested in detoxing at Atmanjai prior to the beginning of their training (or after their training has finished!) For Robin’s first four days, he ate a raw food diet to help pre-cleanse his body to prepare for the Ultra Cleanse package he would be receiving. Then he participated in a six-day session of Atmanjai’s Ultra Cleanse. While you don’t eat any food for the six days of cleansing, it’s remarkable how much energy you will find that you still have. After the six days on Ultra Cleanse, Robin then participated for four days on Atmanjai’s Eat Well cleanse, which integrates fresh fruit and vegetables into the cleanse to help your body begin to readapt to eating. Robin and I can both confirm these programs are an excellent way to begin a weight loss regimen at Phuket Fit.

Robin 2

What Was His Daily Routine?

The day starts with a mixture of supplement beverages, and a peaceful walk at Nai Harn beach or a session of relaxing yoga. On the Eat Well program you eat three small meals of raw fruits and vegetables, while on the Ultra Cleanse program you receive an additional session of colon hydrotherapy to help fully cleanse your system.  The rest of the day is a whirlwind of treatments (including daily massage), supplements, coaching sessions, swimming and rebounding. Robin said the acupuncture treatments were especially helpful to him and that is help to ease the pain he feels from damaged tissue in his shoulder.

How He Feels Now

He’s never felt better. He’s able to train his shoulder more effectively after acupuncture, he’s not feeling the intense food cravings he used to, and his metabolism is moving at a lightning speed. He says the biggest change he notices is his energy levels. He’s training harder than even before and has energy to spare. He also was successful in losing weight while on the cleanse. He lost 7 KGs in ten days and has managed to keep it off successfully for the last couple weeks (and lose even more!)

Robin 3

Next Steps Forward

Robin has started training with Phuket Fit’s personal trainer to adapt a workout perfect for him and the limitations he faces with his shoulder. He’s sticking with the healthy eating and the pounds are falling off him. He knows that even though he’s limited in the types of workouts he can do, there’s no good excuse not to workout in the ways that he’s able. He plans on visiting Atmanjai again in the next 2-3 months to help keep his body and mind running in tip-top shape.

If you are interested in attending a detox at Atmanjai, give us a call at Phuket Fit and save 5% when booking through Phuket Fit. It’s a great way to jump start a weight loss journey!
